How to Fail the California FYLSX

Share

If you’re siting for the California First Year Law Student’s Examination with hopes of passing it the first time, pay attention. I failed it the first time. Not because I didn’t exhaust every exam prep aid I could get my hands on. Not because I didn’t do well my first year in law school. I did very well. I failed it because of an unexpected change in my health which in turn drastically changed my travel plans to and from California.

Here’s the short version. The plan was that my husband and I would take the train from Chicago to Oakland. Not in coach, mind you, but in a private room. Total cost round-trip–$3400. But it was going to be a business expense, so we were going to write the whole thing off. I had pitched an idea to a publication about trains, and we were going to document the entire experience by getting off at random small town stations and exploring the area. Not only was I going to get paid for the video, photos, and stories, I was going to get to do what I love before and after the FYLSX. I was looking forward to it. Then…. (more…)

This fact pattern is based on the Zinniker case. Feel free to respond with your answers. We can compare notes. I’ll post mine as soon as I’m done working on it.

Frieda Farmer owns a small homestead in the State of West Consin. On her homestead, she has three milk-producing cows. Each day, she collects approximately 40 lbs of milk from each cow. Frieda has a USDA Grade-A shipping permit, and her cows are certified organic by the USDA. Freida has received awards for her commitment to sanitation, humane animal practices, and quality. For six months now, Freida has only been shipping the milk from two of her cows to the processor to be made into cheese. Some of the milk from the third is consumed by Freida and her family. The rest of the unpasteurized milk is sold to locals who come to the farm to pick it up fresh every morning. Freida doesn’t store the raw milk for customers at any time. (more…)

Seven Tips To Help You Pass the California Baby Bar

Share

If you’ve decided to take the path less traveled on your way to a Juris Doctor, you are no doubt  familiar with the Baby Bar, otherwise known as First Year Law Student Examination (usually abbreviated as FYLSE or FYLSX). This is the test required by the State Bar of California for all first-year law students attending a non-ABA-approved law school. You pass the exam within 3 administrations from the time you become eligible to sit for it, or you’re out. That’s how they roll in California. They throw out the baby, the bathwater, and the tub after 3 failed attempts. (more…)

Proof The State Bar of California Has a Sense of Humor

I’m reviewing for the First Year Law Student’s Examination (FYLSE), which I will be taking for the second time in October 2011. Like all repeaters, I’ve been examining my essay skills and critiquing my multiple choice question technique. I’ve examined every one of my legal reasoning and analytical missteps, probing deeper into my faulty reasoning than a long-fingered proctologist employed by the TSA. But what about the State Bar of California, what’s behind those twisted essay questions? I’ve discovered their secret. Sure they’re trying to test applicants on their legal knowledge, but the State Bar is having some fun with it.

Free MBE Practice Questions For Law Students

Sometimes, the answer is obvious. So says author Steven Finz in Strategies & Tactics for FINZ Multistate Method, Second Edition. Finz tells us not to miss the simple opportunities on the MBE. It’s sage advice, and it applies to another exam-related problem–finding fresh multiple choice questions without putting a second mortgage on your house.

While browsing Amazon’s selection of study aids for law students, I noticed the obvious. Each preview I looked at contained at least 3 multiple choice questions along with the answers. The Kaplan study guides in the Ferris wheel to right have 9 or more questions and answers each. Just press the buttons to spin the wheel or click on one of the book thumbnails. When you get to Amazon, simply click on the preview option. In the table of contents, you will find live links to the questions and answers. (more…)

I Failed the California Baby Bar, and It's Casey Anthony's Fault

For nearly two months, my subconscious let me know that I didn’t pass the California First-Year Law Student’s Examination (FYLSE, also called the ‘baby bar’). While I waited for my results, I checked my horoscope compulsively, drank more wine than I should have, and assured myself that there was no way I didn’t pass it. I did well on the Concord final. But at night, I dreamed of having to go back—back to the place with the giant trees, back to the library, back to church. In each of these dreams, I saw something associated with Pasadena, California, where I sat for the June 2011 FYLSE. The church was the part of the Pasadena Convention Center, where the test is given, so was the library. I knew I had failed, yet I tried the “keep a positive attitude” routine, and tried to convince myself that I had reached the 560 score that would allow me to continue, triumphantly on through my second year. Some days, it worked. Most days it didn’t. (more…)
