The first time I remember having sex is when I was 4-years old. There may have been other times, but before the encounter that occurred when I was four, I remember only beatings and being made to eat off the floor like a dog because I used my left hand to pick up my baby fork. (In the early ’60s, those who were left-handed were considered mentally inferior.) I even remember the highchair I was jerked from before he threw me on the floor while she watched. She watched—a lot. She even had sex with him on my bed when I was 12. Shortly thereafter, she was named mother of the year by a local community group. (more…)

Why rising food prices are a good thing

Panic. Take to the streets. Food prices are about to rise through the roof. So says the usual cadre of Chicken Littles. The sky is falling. Hoard as much food as you can. Sigh. Can we just think this thing through without becoming hysterical?

The fear mongers have taken to the airways, telling you that a candy bar will soon cost upwards of $11.oo. A can of soda will cost somewhere around $6.00. So what? Neither are food. Okay, technically, they are edible and most of the population considers them food, but they’re not. You don’t need either to live. You can’t get the nutrition your body needs to be healthy, or your brain needs to reason (which explains the current lack of intelligence in the national media). (more…)

It’s amazing what people will eat and drink if it sounds good. But one has to wonder, if we stopped for a moment and considered the names of stuff that passes for food and beverage, would we still consume it? Ask yourself, why someone would drink Mountain Dew if they realized that the only way dew is yellow is if it’s really urine. Remember what Frank Zappa said—Watch out where the huskies go, and don’t you eat that yellow snow. The next time you see someone swigging a cold Mountain Dew, you might want to ask them how the dew got so yellow all the way up there on the mountain. I’m betting on the Abominable Snowman. (more…)

Be Prepared: Medicinal herbs you should keep on hand

Readers who remember the Great Depression have generously shared their memories of the era with the rest of us. In those memories, are stories of homemade medicines. Homemade remedies are often just as effective as expensive over-the-counter pharmaceutical remedies. You don’t need expensive cleaning solutions for minor cuts and scrapes.
