What do you call 100 lawyers buried up to their necks in sand? A sand shortage. And so goes one of untold numbers of lawyer jokes. For some reason, everyone likes to bash the legal profession. It seems no one has qualms about calling lawyers crooks, liars, and assorted other derogatory names. But is it fair? Are lawyers the problem? Are lawyers the reason for higher insurance rates and sky-rocketing consumer prices? Not even close. While insurance companies and manufacturers would love to operate with impunity, cheating people out of their insurance claims and putting out unsafe products, the fact remains that the American justice system and its lawyers have made the world a much safer place for all of us.
